ADA – Americans with Disabilities Act

ADA Request Flow Chart file PDF

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a comprehensive federal, civil rights law that requires public accommodations to provide goods and services to people with disabilities on an equal basis with the rest of the general public.  This piece of legislation ensures equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities in employment, public accommodations, transportation, State and local government services (such as public education), and telecommunications.  The ADA protects individuals with impairments that substantially limit a major-life activity.  The law also provides protection for individuals who might experience episodic disabilities, or conditions that may go into remission.

All Jordan School District facilities are deemed ADA accessible.  Requests for assisted listening devices, enlarged written materials or other accommodations to access a facility, program, or service should be directed to the school principal/department director.  At the Auxiliary Services Building, you can contact Paul Bergera by e-mail or by phone at 801-567-8753.  Providing at least 72 hours advance notice will help to ensure availability.

The Facilities ADA Coordinator monitors Jordan School District buildings and grounds in order to ensure compliance with the provisions of the ADA and the applicable accessibility guidelines.  The Facilities ADA Coordinator inspects schools and District facilities in order to determine appropriate solutions for barrier removal.  Each facility is evaluated to determine if barriers exist and projects are prioritized based on what is readily achievable.  The process of determining what changes are readily achievable is ongoing.  If a barrier is identified as readily or necessary to be removed, work is ordered immediately to address the area of non-compliance.  Major remodel or renovation projects are determined annually as part of the District’s ongoing transition plan.  The Facilities ADA Coordinator also works in concert with the Human Resources Department to evaluate requests for accommodations for employees, patrons, and students.
